Audition Brief: Captain Morgan for Diageo GB

Overview:
Diageo GB are recruiting ‘Captains’ to deliver their experiential marketing activity to promote their alcoholic Captain Morgan Rum in bars around the UK.

The activity objectives are to bring the Captain Morgan Brand to life, in an engaging and memorable way, through the Captain’s personality, immersing bar customers in a complete brand experience.

The experience is called ‘Keys to Adventure’ (KTA) and centres around the Captain (accompanied by 3 promo girls- ‘The Morganettes’) visiting bars in character and distributing keys to bar customers that are either winning or losing keys to the Captain’s treasure chest. Winning keys open the chest and win branded t-shirts, armbands and other promo items. The Morganette promo girls distribute free drink samples.


Captain Auditions:
Please ensure all candidates have read the Captain’s brief
Please supply a 1-2 min (max) long audition video for suitable candidates:

The video needs to include:
- The actor presenting himself: age, height, his acting experience
- Portray the Captain without dressing up. Focus on the personality words for the Captain to act this personality out in the applicant’s OWN ACCENT
- Act out a scene e.g.:
• The Captain is recruiting new crew members for his ship
• The Captain is talking about his last grand voyage
• The Captain is running for office

Dates:
Full schedule TBC and flexible pending Captains’ availabilities, however the Captains’ needs to each be available for approx 50 events over a period of 25 weeks spread across the year from July 2011 – July 2012 for between 1 and 3 nights per week (likely on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays).

There will be no more than 2 events per night, a max of 3 nights per week. Some weeks there will not be any events. The hours are approx 9pm – 1am depending on location (all locations will be regional).

July 2011 dates confirmed as 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th, 9th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 28th, 29th, 30th.

The best selection of video auditions will be invited to London for 3 days live training on 22 – 25 June 2011. Accommodation, travel and expenses will be covered.


Fees:
Selected Captains will be paid £300 per night for upto 2 events. An additional £100 per night is also paid as a completion bonus after completing 3months of events (based on number of nights completed).
Completion bonuses are also repeated after 6months, 9months & 12months.

***Additional Opportunity:
The brand is recruiting 12 captains around the UK. One of these will also be selected to become the UK National Captain, who will take part in approx 2-3 KTA’s per month, but will also be used for PR stunts, press commitments and other media based activities as the UK face of the brand.

The fee for this role is to be negotiated based on experience, but will be minimum of £600 - £800 (for KTA’s) + PR stunt fees which could be upto an additional £2000 per month. The 3month bonus scheme also applies as per above.

FULL DETAILS:
Brief overview of how KTA works:

- The Captain and Morganettes enter a bar at the right time when energy levels are rising but the party has not fully started just yet
- They make a big entrance with supporting music to draw the crowd’s attention with a short performance on a stage/cleared area
- The Captain hands out keys to his treasure chest allowing customers to win giveaways, he interacts with the bar customers while the Morganettes distribute samples of Captain Morgan & Cola.
- To keep the energy levels high and attention on the team, the Captain and Morganettes need to ‘perform (ie: dance on tables) at regular intervals
- Whilst interacting with the customers the Captain needs to do the Captain’s ‘pose’ (see image below) especially with consumers in photos
- Captain leaves, followed by the Morganettes after approx 45 minutes leaving the party on a high- the perception is that he has created the party- the legendary time
- Ideal time frame is 45 - 60 minutes, but there is flexibility for more time
- Captain and Morganettes always stay in character, especially on exit

Who are the target audience?
- 18 – 24 year old bar customers

The Captain’s Role:
- You’re the ultimate host- your job is to lead customers out of the ordinary and to spark legendary times!
- Create a dynamic and exciting entrance with the Morganettes through enormous amounts of energy, customer interaction and dancing
- Interact and engage bar customers in the brand, the ‘pose’ and the product. However the Captain is not a sales guy
- The Captain NEVER distributes drink samples
- The Captain must remind customers to Drink Responsibly. Captain’s Orders!
- The Captain distributes the keys to the Treasure chest

The Captain’s Physical appearance:
- Tall 5’10+ very important to have a presence!
- Athletic build (masculine traits are important for the brand)
- 28+ years old (needs a bit of maturity)
- Striking facial features (either have beard and moustache already, or can carry off the fancy dress beard and moustache)
- Have a deep voice
- Attractive
- Clean / well groomed

The Captain’s Uniform
- He must wear the uniform provided (see pic below- this is also the ‘pose’)

Background Information

The Brand:
- Captain Morgan is the loveable rogue with a fun-loving attitude and larger than-life party spirit. Captain is a great tasting spirit that is perfect to mix, especially with cola.
- For 18-24 year old guys, Captain Morgan is the brand that best sparks legends because of ‘The Captain’s’ fun loving, mischievous personality and larger-than-life party spirit – as well as the brand’s always popular, great flavour.

Meet the Legend
- In 1654, Henry Morgan left Wales for the West Indies. He never looked back. A born leader, he quickly made Captain and became famous as a Buccaneer.
- He pioneered expeditions to the ‘New World’. In partnership with his crew they were famous for their love of the adventure and generally rocked the Caribbean.
- His awesome exploits on the high seas earned him a knighthood in 1674. And by 1680 the swashbuckling buccaneer became Sir Henry Morgan and Governor of Jamaica.

What we are looking for:
- He should have and portray a humour that is intelligent rather than explicit
- The Captain should be aspirational for our target customer
- The Captain should be someone the customers want to be/hang out with!
