Rum is an anti-coming of age story about Archie, a lonely ten-year-old introvert trying to live in his own imagination. When his brother Richie, a burnt out twenty-one year old alcoholic, returns home in the hope of finding some respite from life, mixed feelings surface within the family. Whilst parents Peter and Julie try to accept him back, Archie struggles to adjust to his presence and responds surprisingly.

After a clash between the brothers, Richie is forced to leave, but first attempts to reconcile some form of bond with his estranged brother. Once he has gone, Archie realizes how much he needs him, and beats his fear of venturing into the real world to pursue him. He finds Richie drunk on a beach nearby and inspires him to re-evaluate his lifestyle. The brothers head to a viewpoint atop a cliff, and release their pent-up angst through screaming at the world together, united and optimistic.
