About:
SIR JOHN MARLEY (50s) " Mayor of Newcastle.
Despite being surrounded by an army that outnumbered his twenty to one,
John Marley, who did not have a military background belligerently held out
against the Scots and managed to do so for two months. Some think he was
naive, and should have surrendered as he faced an impossible situation with
no chance of relief. Others think he was cleverly denying the
Parliamentarian cause 30,000 troops from elsewhere by forcing them to
remain camped outside Newcastle " which was also denying Parliamentarian
London its coal for the fast approaching winter.
LORD ALEXANDER LEVEN (60s) " Scottish / Parliamentarian Commander
Lord Leven is an old hand at this. He feels ambivalent towards Marley "
on the one hand he admires his belligerence, on the other he is exasperated
by his cheek, and concerned that he is forcing his army to remain camped in
the damp, the cold and with the prospect of winter around the corner.
MARGARET GRANT (age not important, but probably anything from mid 20s to
late 50s)
Representing the people of Newcastle, Margaret is one of the important
women who played a vital role during the siege. It was the womens role
to act as stretcher bearers, nurses for the wounded and providers of food
and water to the men on the "front line"
BELL (aged 30s-50s)
Adviser to John Marley " smaller speaking role
HEPBURN (aged 40s-50s)
One of Levens lieutenants " smaller speaking role
OFFICER (aged 20s " 40s)
