Details:

In England, 13 people take their lives every day: with men particularly at risk. In London around two men die by suicide each month, with many more people making suicide attempts. Difficult economic circumstances, loneliness, drugs and alcohol, self-harm, trauma and mental health issues, all play a part. The consequences of each death on families and communities are devastating and long- lasting.

This group of men want to take action and interrupt this notion.

I want you to know that the arts bring joy and enrichment to your lives and that engagement with the arts carries with it a number of additional positive impacts. As an older black male myself, this is true as I get older and wiser, with arts engagement I can help others to overcome social isolation and loneliness, maintain health and wellbeing and increase their resilience.
You want to join this project because you:

want to design and deliver innovative participatory arts activities and cultural projects & programmes

want to use and develop your creativity with like minded men to make meaningful and memorable performances

demand a safe space to be 'yourself', 'no fronting' ,' no masks' , being able to be 'vulnerable' whilst being held, supported and nurtured by others

want to fulfil your pursuit of connection, creativity, togetherness and healing

want to join and develop an organisation that politically and artistically supports black men around the issues of mental health and suicide

want to raise the awareness to help reduce suicide and educate people on the alternative changes that are needed to bring about a social change

need to be involved in solution focused work that makes black men feel a sense of equality and justice within mental health and psychiatry

want to be involved in training and networking opportunities in the field of trauma

want to express yourself through the arts; stories; performance; theatre; dance; music; poetry; film; visual arts; creative writing and literature; painting; song; meditation; movement work;

If that's a yes, then this could be for you!

The project uses Theatre of the Oppressed techniques and other arts based practice to alleviate isolation, anxiety, depression and stress. Participants will develop plans to create change within their mental health which will act as a catalyst to promote health and wellbeing and strengthen skills and local knowledge, particularly about how to access support.
Weekly sessions will be playful, memorable and fun!
