Synopsis:
When a family of travellers come to a rural town, conflict ensues amongst the locals. Stigmatised as “gypsies” they are not welcomed into the community.
Woodfalls revolves around the children of the family, Billy and Rebecca. For Billy, living in the town is an eye opening experience, as he finds himself excepted into a group of similarly aged, ‘boy racers’. Being a young, unmarried female, Rebecca lives under a strict regime and isn’t given the chance to experience small town life. As life for the Marr family begins to settle, an incident causes a questioning of faith and belonging, dividing these two cultures once and for all.
Woodfalls not only takes a look at a much publicised, but widely misunderstood culture, but is also an examination of ‘Generation X’. Fitting somewhere in between Taxi Driver, This is England and American Graffiti; Woodfalls is a dark, gritty and explosively violent portrayal of British life, complete with a Dubstep score.
Character BIOS:
Travellers
[Billy Marr] [GENDER: Male] [AGE: 20-26]
Since the unexpected death of his father, Billy has been made ‘man of the house’ by default. This means he is now expected to care for his mother and sister. However, Billy is reluctant to take on the role.
It would appear that Billy was the most affected by his family’s Dale Farm-style eviction. The negativity generated towards his culture caused Billy to question what it means to be a traveller and why he should continue.
On moving to Woodfalls, Billy integrates himself into the local town and begins a transition which will be the main arc of the film- should he remain loyal to his roots, or lead the life he so wishes to?
Billy is humble, but confident in himself. He is a naturally gifted fighter, possibly a trait he received from his father. Despite his good looks and confidence, Billy is still very much a fish out of water, which is why he relies so much on his friends’ guidance.
[Rebecca Marr] [GENDER: FEMALE] [AGE: 18-24]
For her age, Rebecca appears naive and even immature. This is because she has had a very strict upbringing and has led quite a sheltered life. However, since the family have moved away from their trusted site, Rebecca has taken an interest in other cultures, but is yet to question her own strict upbringing.
If Billy’s arc is social, Rebecca’s is very much sexual. Isolated from her friends, unable to talk to her family about such matters, Rebecca faces her journey into womanhood alone.
Lacking confidence, Rebecca is a curious character with a very willing nature. She will listen to any point of view and has a passive attitude. Definitely naive and painfully innocent, the violence that eventually transpires has a heavy effect on her psyche.
[Marie Marr] [GENDER: FEMALE] [AGE: 40-70]
Marie is a born and bred traveller, with little concept of the world around her. Her values spawn from her reading of religion, which comes from not what she has read or learned, but from her own parents and upbringing. This means Marie resists change, or other points of view, which puts her in direct conflict with both of her children.
Marie is a strict, but caring mother. She suffers from asthma, which gets worse as the family are antagonised. This puts more pressure on Billy to look after her.
Non travellers:
[Damon] [GENDER: Male] [AGE: 20-27]
For all intensive purposes, Damon is the antagonist of the piece. His hostility towards the travellers is unclear, until we meet his father [see Russell]. Obviously affected by his upbringing, Damon is a dangerous force; a livewire who will flip at the switch of a button.
However, his arc is the most profound of the piece and we eventually see a much different side to him. Damon is far from a two dimensional villain and as his arc develops, we feel sympathy for him.
[Bradley] [GENDER: Male] [AGE: 20-26]
Gifted with natural leadership qualities, Bradley is a diplomatic, funny, well liked guy, who is also the first to welcome Billy into the group. Very aware of not only himself, but his surroundings, Bradley seems to be questioning his lifestyle just as Billy his questioning his own. For Bradley, the idea of spending his whole life in the same town is painful, but it doesn’t look like he’ll ever get out.
On the surface, Bradley could be considered a ‘chav’. He is a boy racer with a bad car, bad habits and bad fashion sense. However, scratch the surface and you will find a caring, sensitive young man with more ambition than meets the eye.
[Wozzle] [GENDER: Male] [AGE: 19-26]
Wozzle is seen periodically throughout the piece. Known by the whole town as the local drug dealer, Wozzle is also known for his questionable taste in girls [his current girlfriend is of school age].
Wozzle has very few likable attributes; even the way he moves suggests a certain sleaziness and menace. However, because of his cocky nature, he is an engaging presence, especially when telling stories or jokes.
Towards the end of the second act, Wozzle not only becomes a big part of the story, but also the key antagonist. For a character without a lot of screen time, he leaves a major impact.
[Russel] [GENDER: Male] [AGE: 40-65]
Damon’s father. Russell is a brutish character; both intimidating and menacing. His hold over the entire town is enormous, everybody knows and fears him.
The dispute between his son and the travellers has caused Russell much embarrassment and he’s very vocal about his problems with Damon. During a monologue, Russell let’s slip about how the world bothers him, which gives great insight into his mentality and what makes him tick.
Despite his terrifying reputation, Russell has got himself caught up with the wrong people. This leads to a bloody encounter which proves life changing for Damon.
[Kelly] [GENDER: FEMALE] [AGE: 18-25]
Kelly is a single mother, so she is as strong and self assured as you would imagine.
Despite her parental status, Kelly does still party with her friends. She is attractive and seductive, as Billy soon finds out when he meets her at a house party. However, Kelly is not about to be ‘looked after’ by a guy. Her fierce independence could be mistaken for a bad attitude, but this is not the case. If life has learned her one thing, it’s that she only has herself to depend on.
Supporting characters:
[Bruce] [GENDER: Male] [AGE: 20-27]
Damon’s ‘right hand man’, because of his intimidating stature. Bruce is overshadowed by Damon’s personality, but during his quieter moments, he reveals a self conscious personality.
[Sammy] [GENDER: Male] [AGE: 20-26]
Another friend of Damon’s, Sammy is the weakest of the group. If he was too hang around with a different group, he wouldn’t get in any trouble at all. Sammy also suffers from sweaty palms, which is caused by stress or fear.
[Nora] [GENDER: FEMALE] [AGE: 35-45]
Trashy, but kind hearted. Russell’s girlfriend, which means she has bad taste in men. Nora has the face of somebody who has seen it all. We imagine her past relationships, possibly the victim of domestic abuse, but this hasn’t made her any less trusting. She has a diplomatic personality, allowing her to deal with Russell without annoying him.
