Details:

We are now auditioning for the lead roles – we aren’t seeing people for specific roles as such and we are completely open to changing genders, ethnicities etc. of the traditional roles, so we’d welcome applications from any person 14-30yrs who might fit into the setting described below. The characters live in an urban, underprivileged, dystopian world...
Screen Northants is a social enterprise film company based in Northamptonshire. We are producing our first feature film this summer - a modern day, urban Macbeth with Director Daryl Chase (credits include in-house Film Director Burberry including their Festive Film starring Romeo Beckham, Julie Walters and James Corden, and award-winning short film The Thinker and as a DP on many award-winning music docs for likes of Kaiser Chiefs and Jake Bugg). You can watch the teaser trailer here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_yeVeJUZJI

Screen Northants is unique in that we produce films but we do so in a non-profit, socially responsible way – we have BBC Children in Need funding to support the feature, where a fully professional crew will also provide real world work experience opportunities to young people wanting to enter the Film Industry and disadvantaged children. Think of us a bit like a teaching hospital: we do our job, and no one should see the difference in the finished product, but we make sure our work has a lasting impact on both improving the diversity and quality of our industry, and the lives of young people.

Synopsis:

Set in a dystopian estate on the fringes of society, under the rule of Duncan, Macbeth has lived through countless feuds, protecting his own ‘castle’ against attack for as long as he would like to remember. A malevolent force entices with the promise of a future as ‘king’, replacing Duncan. Escaping his way life would be the first choice but this opportunity is one he cannot ignore, offering the chance to prove his worth to the love of his life, Lady Macbeth. On hearing the prophesy her suggestion is to encourage the position early, to murder Duncan. With a poisoned mind and seemingly no choices left, Macbeth commits the deed with grave mental consequences. Descending into turmoil, Macbeth takes down everything around him on his way to fulfilling a dark destiny set by an other-worldly force. Was this force so other worldly or does it have its own motivations, unbeknownst to Macbeth?

Far from being a youth/gang cliché film, this is a deeper, darker tale of politics, desire, ambition, corruption, ego and obsession. As the world closes physically and mentally around Macbeth the sense of real and surreal hangs dangerously in the balance.

Maintaining the original Shakespeare text but burying it deep in a real and modern world the film will take the same ethos visually. Shakespeare sought to give people an escape from their lives, to weave magical tales, enticing them to forget the world for a moment, but often by showing them a reality masked in mystery. Macbeth is a story relevant to many walks of life including this re-telling.

We will be filming for 4-5 weeks (some roles will only be required for a small number of days) – anticipated to be the last week of July to the end of August in Northamptonshire. We are a charitable organisation and are currently fundraising further but at the very least we can offer all roles expenses and accommodation, and hope to be able to pay a nominal fee to lead roles. The film will be distributed traditionally even though we are a non-profit. We appreciate that is very wishy washy but would love to see anyone who is interested even if they have a certain threshold for payment.

While our budget is small, our ambition is huge (heard it all before right?! but it's true!) and because of our backing from people like BBC Children in Need we anticipate quite a lot of press coverage etc. Contact northantsmacbeth@gmail.com
