Details:

This job WILL be paid - the majority of our budget will be used to pay the cast but the exact amount is unknown at the moment as it will be based on how much money we can raise between now and the day of the shoot.

We are casting for a final year film studies student short film (approx. 10 minutes long) - a project that will be marked and go towards our final grade (you will also of course be sent and able to keep a copy of the film for any personal/portfolio related use). We will also be submitting it to a film festival.

The synopsis of our drama is that an older/elderly woman lives in an isolated country house on her own after her husband had passed away. She plans to commit suicide but gets a call at the last minute from a distant neighbour who wishes for her to babysit her young teenaged son for some time, and in doing this Ryan reintroduces her to life and her sense of purpose is restored.

Our film follows the relationship between Irene and Ryan, both at opposite ends of life’s journey. Ryan is introduced to this world after a family emergency leaves him in the care of his neighbour, Irene. At first reluctant to the company, Irene attempts to continue her lonely routine with her suicide in mind, but she can’t shake off Ryan’s curiosity as he probes her life and belongings, Irene is put to task on her decision.

We’re aiming to tell a story that is equally emotional as it is lighthearted and thought-provoking. Our main goal is not to be manipulative or too sentimental with our approach.

THE CHARACTERS:

Irene - Irene is a retired architect, her expansive house reflects her life's work. She has recently been widowed and is feeling at a loss without her husband. So far she has managed to uphold a routine but it isn’t enough for her to continue. The film begins with her attempted suicide which is interrupted by a visit from her neighbour Zoe. After she agrees to look after Zoe’s son, Ryan, we see the full extent of her commitment to packing away her life. She can’t bring herself to see the joy.

Ryan - Ryan is a timid but intelligent teenager studying at secondary school. He has a passion for the outdoors, and is never seen without his new fancy camera gifted to him from his father.. After growing up in an isolated community, Ryan is suffering from loneliness too.

Zoe - Zoe is Ryan’s mother and Irene’s only neighbour. She is kind and bubbly but somewhat clueless after leaving her son in the care of a women she scarcely knows. Zoe’s neglect leads to Ryan staying in the house longer than anticipated.
