Details:

On Saturday 3rd August, a cast who have just met an hour beforehand will give a completely unrehearsed performance of As You Like It at a secret pop up location in South London. There are no auditions and applicants will be sent a role to learn and told when and where to turn up for the performance. You must choose and bring your own costume and props and there will be no artistic direction or rehearsal of any kind.

Guerilla Shakespeare was created as an experiment to see what happens when you remove all the conventional layers of rehearsal from a performance and just let actors go with their instincts. It involves a performance of a Shakespeare play with no rehearsals and no direction in a space which is not usually used as a theatre. Anyone is welcome to apply whether they are a professional actor or someone who has never set foot on a stage before, and they are given a role and sent a script to learn. They are responsible for choosing their own costume and props, with no direction from us, and they meet an hour before the performance is due to begin and perform the play.

British Touring Shakespeare are constantly looking for ways to make classical performance relevant in the 21st century, and Guerilla Shakespeare is a way to make these plays that have been performed so often through the years continue to be a vital, exciting and above all unpredictable creative force for modern audiences. This is real community theatre that is intended to make Shakespeare plays accessible to anyone to watch or perform, and we’re thrilled with the response that we have had so far from the professional acting community, the general public and the wonderful venues that we’ve been staging these events at.

Previous events have included Henry V at the Wallace Collection as part of the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, Troilus and Cressida at the British Museum as part of their special exhibition Shakespeare: Staging The World, and Romeo and Juliet at the Roundhouse with their young performers programme.

A short documentary feature was made about the latter which you can watch at this link:
