“The Dame” (working title) Synopsis
15-minute fiction film: comedy/romance/film noir. Filmed in HD.
Dave is in his thirties, he is single, he is on the dole, and he is living a dream. In his mind Dave is a cool, silver-tongued, highly intelligent private investigator going by the name of Detective Fry, living in a fantasy 1940s world, where women are ‘dames’, cigarettes are cool and life is soundtracked by jazz. In short, Dave is delusional. In reality it is 2012 and Dave owes rent, has never had a girlfriend, and his Gumtree-ad detective services are a far cry from the crime and adultery capers he dreams of.
There are few people close to Dave. His flatmate Carlos has learnt to live with Dave’s idiosyncrasies, but is sick of having to front Dave’s share of the rent. Dave’s mum is a nagging presence in his life, and is always on his case, concerned about him. The waitress at the coffee shop, where he spends most of his days, has been in love with Dave for a long time, but hasn’t the courage to make her feelings known. Dave is completely oblivious to this fact, his sights are set elsewhere; over the road from the café in fact, where “The Dame” works in a vintage clothes shop. Dave is infatuated with The Dame. He has never spoken to her; he doesn’t even know her name, but as Detective Fry he has been borderline stalking her for weeks.
Dave lives a life of routine. He goes to the same places, does the same things, drinks coffee, smokes cigarettes, helps old ladies find their missing pets, and spies on The Dame. He mimics the lives of his role models: detectives from 1940s detective films. “The Dame She Walked Away” follows Dave on one such day and takes a closer look at the clash between fantasy and reality at play in his world.
Style and Themes
Stylistically this film flits between a naturalistic modern day reality, and the film noir aesthetic style of Detective Fry’s fantasy. This film attempts to combine genres, to play with their boundaries, and to pay homage to film noir style, with a black comedy overtone. The film will be narrated by Detective Fry’s inner monologue.
The film explores themes of homage, parody and pastiche through its emoulation of classical film noir style. It explores the themes of escapism, isolation and dilusion as it investigates the mind of a person living in a fantasy world. The theme of post-modernism is also explored through the notion of one genre submerging into another and the blurring of the boundaries of expectation, with a focus on genre as being in the eye of the beholder.
