John is in his late forties with straggly greying hair. He is thin and of medium height. He walks with a slight limp and usually keeps his head bowed to avoid eye contact. He carries himself with shoulders hunched which gives him the look of one who is burdened. He looks like a scrawny bird.

John is dressed in a tatty dark coat. Underneath, he is wearing a shirt and a jumper that have seen better days. They are too big for him. He has a tie which hangs loose around his collar. The top button of his shirt is missing. A dirty pair of dark trousers hang from his hips. String is being used to hold them up. Tucked in the pocket of his trousers is a wedding band. He wears a pair of battered and torn trainers on his feet without socks.

John has no interest in what is happening in the world around him or the people in it. He does not expect to be noticed or liked. He feels safe being alone and the lack of communication with people and the world suits him.

John has chosen to shut out the world. After losing his wife to cancer, he found that the life he was living had no meaning. He decided to abandon it and left behind a job, a home and a life. The only connection that he kept from that existence was his wife’s dog, Honey. He finds solace in his life. It makes the grief bearable.
