Scene Synopsis:
After months of teasing from his parents and friends, Joe has finally invited a new girlfriend, Katie, home to meet his parents; Tom and Gerri. She is fun and chirpy, and the four sit down for a lunch of fresh tomatoes from the allotment and homemade bread.
However, Tom and Gerri have long played therapist to family friend Mary. Both Tom and Gerri are wary of her arrival, and tensions escalate as Mary sees herself distanced from the romantic relationship she long thought possible with Joe.
Breakdowns:
1. Tom
An engineering geologist. A kind-hearted, jovial and fatherly figure. With a broad regional accent and an infectious chuckle, he is warm, friendly and genuine. Playing age: 55-65
2. Gerri

A solicitor. A quiet but confident man, with an easy and comfortable relationship with his parents – Tom and Gerri. He has Tom’s sharp wit and bright eyes, but is slightly more coy than his jovial father. Playing age: 30-35
4. Katie
An occupational therapist. Katie is extroverted and overly friendly. She is a loving and affectionate person and wants to build a stronger relationship with Joe through making a good impression on his parents. Playing age: 30-35
5. Mary
A secretary, who works with Gerri. Mary is a recent divorcee who is constantly battling depression and anxiety whilst trying to become part of a safe, kind-natured family that she never has had. Neurotic and emotionally unstable. Playing age: 40-50
