Details:

A pilot episode for a 10-15 minute web-series drama for the internet, produced by students at York St John University.

ReFocus is a student produced drama that offers a modern alternative to traditional television. It will be in the traditional sense an office based drama about the UK film industry politics and the relationships of the people within it. But like the business the series is about, it will self reflect on the progress of the industry and comment on contemporary issues within it. It will do this through storylines and the very medium that it will deliver the content through.

ReFocus is more than a traditional web series. In terms that it is joining the frontline of real dramatic online content that considers itself as a serious alternative to scheduled television. Bryan Singer (X-men, The Usual Suspects), Josh Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, The Avengers), Lisa Kudrow ( Friends), Neil Patrick Harris (How I met your mother) are amongst the growing few experimenting in the medium in the present as well as Netflix and HBO. ReFocus is another experiment that delivers a rather unused genre in a medium overpopulated by comedy and science-fiction/fantasy programmes. This genre will be viewed by the very people who are involved in the practices that the office drama is about, mature, career driven people and the medium we seek to deliver is perfect for this audience. With the technology available to audiences now, scheduled TV seems outdated; audiences should now expect to be able to watch what they want, when they want without the fear of missing content. The series availability on the web anywhere at any time and short episode duration should be appealing to its intended busy 21st century audience.

The series will focus on the career driven people in the film industry with themes of ambition, performance, relationships and adaptation to change. It will follow in the wake of such TV shows as ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Breaking Bad’ by having a central character whose motives aren’t morally correct but whose faults and relationships with diverse and interesting characters around them entertain the viewers. One can compare the series themes to that of a Shakespearean play. Like Macbeth the main character is greedy for power and its effect to the people around him is costly. Throughout the series his moral alignment is put into question and it is through the other characters that all represent aspects of his personality that we see this tested.

A series of ReFocus will likely be 6, 12-15 minute long episodes with extra content available alongside through various transmedia mediums. This extra content will expand the universe around untitled project and give the audience more information about the characters, the world and events that affect the characters within the story. Most characters arcs will develop throughout the series with episodes to consider smaller arcs that will be resolved within them. The main arc is the central character’s rise to the top. But as the central character gets higher and higher his position becomes less and less safe because of the smaller arc events that he or other characters have affected. Power or success, especially reached through immoral ways, will always be an unsafe road to climb.
The style of the show will be dark, dramatic and cinematic. It will offer a clean, polished product that will stand out among the other products already on the web. In terms of its look the images will be heavily contrasted and rely on use of montages and busy active scenes. It will in essence be a fictional narrative but set in the real world with real life events and locations.
