Details:

A stark hospital room, three beds, three bodies lying in a coma while their three inner selves try to find out what are the forces that can make them live or die. We encounter the beautiful Flora: a mid-day soap opera actress who is stuck with a controlling husband who is driven to get fame and glory for her. Robin: an ageing writer who purposefully and cruelly destroyed the love in his life and now yearns to die. Sun: the angelic looking amnesiac who has a dark and troubled past, but also has an insatiable and pure ability to love. An actress, a writer, and a convict, misfits united in near death, these characters find themselves in a “middle world” neither alive nor dead, where their thoughts and words run free. Although their bodies may lay in an unconscious, vegetative state their inner selves are able to speak and move freely about the room, to feel emotion as they discover love, hate and finally some meaning to life. Dead [and] Alive will bring you humour and sharp wit. The play asks the question: are we alive or are we just living? Merely going through the motions, too afraid to see what is real, fertile and thrilling. Roles: Flora:(lead role) You will play a blonde Marilyn Monroe-like star in her 30’s. She has a stunning and alluring image, yet is an intelligent and sensitive woman; she is almost happy to be stuck in her comatose state. Because of her coma she is able to liberate herself from her manipulative husband, and her busy and unsatisfactory life. Robin:(lead role) You will play an accomplished writer in his 60’s who is burnt out and feels like he has failed in life. Through his introspective dreams, he reveals various dimensions about his inner self. He has a high-strung, Kurt Vonnegut sort of demeanor, but despite being bitter, cynical, and tired of life, he displays a hidden passion for his lost love, Armelle. Sun:(lead role) With a Jude Law disposition; you will play a mysterious comatose individual in his 20’s who’s inner self suffers from amnesia. Angel-faced with long hair, he is unaware of his past life. Through his comatose, amnesiac state we see him as a positive, innocent and calm person, and his love for Flora reveals him to be a loving and caring character. Francois:(lead role) You will play a tall, solid, and well built Ben Affleck-esque male in his 40’s, desperate and driven to make his wife succeed as an aspiring star through controlling and manipulative ways. He loves her, yet his love is shallow because of his ambitious, self-centered attitude towards his wife’s career. He is driven to see her succeed, so that he can too. Armelle:You will be playing a chic and slender, Sharon Stone-type woman in her 50’s who loves Robin and tries to use the power of her love to pull him out of his coma. She is seductive, manipulative and flirty and has a bubbly and active personality that brings laughter and fun to the play. She loves Robin desperately and constantly surprises him in his comatose state to get him out of it. Please apply by post to: Nadine Wallen, 16 Earls Court Square, London, SW5 9DN
