Synopsis Who Are You? is a concept musical in which three real-life imposters from different nationalities have the opportunity to redeem themselves by competing on a fictional TV reality show, which is at the centre of the musical. Hosted by 19th-century mystery boy KASPAR HAUSER, this sensationalistic TV game/talk show consists of typical interviews intertwined with personal flashbacks from each guest who must convince the audience of their innocence by defending the motives that led them to fool the world about who they really were. In the end, only one of them will get the chance to regain their long-lost honour, social respect and integrity. Yet, when subconsciously confronted by his own morality (represented by a Greek chorus) and the harassing questions of his increasingly rebellious guests, Hauser himself will have to face his past demons and reconsider his repressed identity quest, blurring more and more the fine line dividing reality from memory. In the end, only one thing will remain: life is and will always be theatre.

Character breakdown
KASPAR HAUSER / 21 (looks younger)
The host of the show. To this very day, German boy Kaspar Hauser’s real identity still remains one of the most enduring mysteries of all time. Having supposedly grown up in the complete solitude of a dark cell, he was brought to Nuremberg at the age of 16 where, unable to speak, he became the object of international rumours; many suggesting that he was the hereditary prince of a royal family (the prince of Baden). After two mysterious assassination attempts, he was finally stabbed to death by an unknown person at the age of 21 years old.
Hauser first appears as your typical talk show host: funny, energetic and highly charismatic. He’s a showman, and excels at superficially manipulating his guests and audience in order to get what he wants from them. He’s the puppet master. However, he’s also double-faced, deeply tormented by his past demons. Haunted by the unanswered questions surrounding his true self, he will finally come face to face with his own identity quest.

FRÉDÉRIC BOURDIN / 23 (looks older)
A young French man nicknamed “The Chameleon”. In 1997, Bourdin was found in Spain where he claimed to be Nicholas Barclay, a missing Texan boy who had disappeared three years earlier. Though he had brown eyes (rather than blue) and a strong French accent, he underwent a physical transformation and was eventually flown to the 2 United States, where he convinced Barclay’s family that he was their long-lost child – now 16. He lived with them for five months before being arrested by American authorities.
Bourdin is the trickster, the joker. He appears as quite selfish, aggressive (especially towards Hauser – who he immediately sees as a hypocrite) and slightly emotionless. He comes from an unstable family background, and, having never known his biological father, all he ever searched for was love from a new family. His cleverness has allowed him to become a master in the art of stealing missing childrens’ identities. Still, he can be quite funny, and knows how to charm (or manipulate) the people around him.

ANDREAS GRASSL / 20
Or “The Piano Man”. German-born Andreas Grassl was found in England in 2005. Refusing to speak, he was taken to a hospital where the staff discovered he could play the piano like a prodigy. After four months of speculation on who he really was, he finally broke his silence, admitting he had planned to commit suicide before being found and rescued. More importantly, he never knew how to play the piano.
Grassl is the only one of the three guests who never pretended to be someone else – he just remained silent in order to preserve his anonymity. Little is really known about him, but most theories propose that he was a disturbed, heartbroken gay boy who just ran away from his close-minded town and family. He appears as a shy, sensible young man who seems deeply affected by life. He never speaks (only sings), and is constantly accompanied by one of the nurses who treated him when he was in the hospital. He sometimes borrows characteristics from the Autism/Asperger spectrum.

ANGELA WESSELMAN / 39
The woman behind “catfish”. In 2010, American Angela Wesselman came to prominence by featuring as herself in the documentary “Catfish”. Depicting her real online romance with 20-something New York photographer Yaniv Schulman (who believed she was an attractive Michigan model and musician called Megan), “Catfish” shows how Angela used social networking to create a complete web of lies consisting of more than 15 fake identities meant to interact with Nev’s love interest, the so-called “Megan”.
Angela is fragile, vulnerable and still madly in love with Nev. She sincerely never intended to hurt him, and first appears as an innocent housewife who didn’t measure the impact of her virtual actions. However, there is something quite unsettling about her, as she never really seems to regret what she did. Is she as naive as she wants us to believe? Probably not Selfish? Maybe. One thing is for sure: she is very intelligent. She lives with her husband and three children, two of whom are disabled twins. Angela is full of regrets as she has had a lot of unfulfilled dreams; she would especially love to be a professional ballerina, but threw that dream away to have “some good times”.
