Details:

We are a group of Postgraduate Filmmaking students at the University of Sussex producing a 15-minute comedy drama as part of our thesis film for the course.

'SAD ADA' is a short comedy drama about the frustrations of depression, and the means in which we must cope within a society that is still not tackling mental illness effectively.

Ada is in the bowels of her depression and nobody is really listening. As tensions mount and she reaches her limit, choreographed chaos ensues.

We are looking for actors who will work closely alongside the director, in order to develop characters through a short rehearsal/shooting period. Ideally you will be experienced in improvisation, working with text, character development, be flexible and highly committed. We welcome actors with various training, and acting experiences.

Production details:

- You must be available for rehearsals mid-July (flexible to your availability).
- You must be available for 4 days of shooting from late July to early August. (Exact dates to be negotiated)
- We will be shooting the scenes around Brighton.
- Actors will be paid a small fee for shooting days.
- For rehearsal and shooting days travel expenses will be covered for Brighton and local surrounding areas.
- Food and drink will be provided on shooting days.
- You will be provided a copy of the scene for your show reels. The film will also be submitted to national film festivals.

Casting will take place on Monday 4th July between 10.30am-14.30pm and Tuesday 5th July between 13.00pm-17.00pm.
Please indicate your preferred slot: 10.30, 11.00, 11.30, 12.00, 12.30, 13.00 etc. You will be asked to prepare a short text that will be sent to you along with an improvisation exercise given to you on the day.

Please send an email detail what role you will be auditioning for, along with a CV and any links to previous work to the address below. We will then provide the exact location of the casting and a time slot.

ROLES:

Main character:
Ada, female, mid-twenties.
Ada is a screenwriter for animation. She is incredibly independent but it is unclear whether this through her own choice or a difficulty in connecting with others.
She is currently in a deep depression which is crushing her creativity. While the people around her are general unhelpful, tensions arise and Ada's desperation pushes her beyond her limits, into choreographed chaos.
(N.B. If auditioning for this role please bear in mind there will be choreography involved as well as improvised movement.)

Emily is Ada's flatmate and best friend. She is also in her mid-twenties.
Emily is very proactive which contrasts heavily with Ada's lack of motivation. She cares about Ada but struggles to understand the rut she is in.

Dr. Roberts is Ada's GP. He is in his late 40s. (40-55)
He struggles to use his initiative and feels very limited by current protocols of healthcare.
He often doesn't practice what he preaches.
He lacks a sense humour.

Jules is Ada's mother. She is in her late 40s. (45-60)
She is divorced from Ada's father and spends a large amount of her day perusing lifestyle and fashion blogs in an attempt to keep up. She has some suppressed mental health issues of her own, which means she is constantly trying to brush over Ada's problems.
She means well but she is not a good listener.
