SYNOPSIS: “Romantic Drama; A young student breaks up with his first lover, suffers a family bereavement, and feels very disillusioned with his studies. To try and clear his mind, he leaves the city and heads back home to the countryside for one weekend, where he meets up with friends old and new, and attempts to discover what he really wants from life, and how to be happy again.”.

INFLUENCES: Éric Rohmer dialogue, Nick Drake lyrics, Y Tu Mamá También, Her (2013), Kieslowski’s visual style, Before Sunrise, Xavier Dolan scripts, On The Road, The Great Beauty’s themes and the style of the French New Wave.

BACKGROUND INFO: This project is being made by a group of young student filmmakers from across the UK. The Writer / Director / DOP’s previous short, ‘Lost Pleasures’, is currently on the festival circuit, and recently screened at the BAFTA-qualifying London Short Film Festival 2015.

GENERAL: Please feel free to ask any questions! We’re more interested in potential rather than experience, and whether a character really speaks to you. Auditions will be in May 2015, within a Central London location. Unfortunately this is travel expenses and food only, but our ambitions for this project are extremely high, with our target being screenings at big international festivals between 2016 - ’17.

NOTE: The actual shoot dates are yet to be confirmed, but will be around 3 - 4 weeks between June - July 2015.

***CHARACTER PROFILES***

ALEX (the protagonist) - Literature student, who’s just broken up with his first girlfriend, recently lost a close relative, and feels disillusioned with his studies. He also struggles to maintain close friendships, and spends days isolated in his flat, out of touch with the rest of society. However, he’s gained some early success with his writing. He’s now stuck at a crossroads in his life, unsure whether to drop out of university, how to move on from his lover, and worried as to whether you can balance professional success with a healthy social life.

EVIE - Aspiring filmmaker, stuck doing odd jobs during her gap year. She’s extremely honest, very chatty, has a fantastic sense of humour, and is always keen to try something new. A left-wing student activist, she meets Alex on the tube, whilst on her way to a “Free Education” march. After doing the near-impossible (breaking the ice on public transport), they become friendly, and she persuades him to come along too, leading to a very memorable afternoon..

KATIE - An introvert, but has so much to say. She tries to express herself through music*, and is a talented singer-songwriter, although barely anyone’s heard her songs. She’s very spiritual, overly polite, quite shy, and in love with organic food. Has few friends, but is close to those she has. Alex is her ex-boyfriend, and the film is set in the aftermath of their breakup. Although she’s not active in the main storyline (which follows his perspective), her presence is felt throughout, via the protagonist’s recollections of their key moments together.

*Musical ability is NOT a requirement, but it would help.

FAYE - Until recently, a shy, modest and very cynical girl, with few friends. The sort of person you wouldn’t notice in the middle of a half-empty room. Now, the life and soul of a party. She befriended Alex through social media a year before, when she was still shy, and after breaking up with Katie, he got back in touch with her. They text each other frequently, which often leads to flirtation, but it’s artificial, based on their idealised image of one another, rather than the real person. They’re not right for each other, and deep down they both know it.

LEWIS - Aspiring journalist / film critic / intellectual. Dry sense of humour. Easily offended by ‘small’ things. At times, his passion and idealism can verge on aggression, but he can also be quiet, sweet company. Always keeps his hands in his pockets. He’s an old school friend of Alex’s, and after hearing he’s back home, invites him into his small social group, leading to a fun weekend of travel, spontaneity and intelligent discussions. He’s dating Rob, another member of the group, but they don’t like to make it too obvious.

SOPHIA - Fun and down-to-earth, but also quite reserved, especially on the topic of past lovers. Liberal Arts student. Took a gap year beforehand, travelling around Asia all by herself. She’s sociable, but also quite independent, and lives by herself. Often doubts her abilities, but always likes to make a decent effort at anything. Always fashionably dressed. She’s got to know Lewis and Rob over the last few months, and through them meets Alex. She quickly falls for him, but gets upset at his seeming lack of interest.
