The tone of the video will be very much in-keeping with the bittersweet and elegant melancholy of the song.
The stereotypical Hollywood movie would have us believe the world will end in riot, rape and pillage. I believe if the end was nigh, the world would not descend into chaos, at least not in its most negative sense. But rather like the diagnosis of a terminal illness, I believe people would instead begin to really live.

My notion of the end of the world references the ideas of the “Carnivalesque” by Mikhail Bakhtin. During carnival according to Bakhtin a world-upside-down is created, societal norms are inverted and hierarchy is abolished. There is free and familiar interaction between people, eccentric behaviour is welcomed and accepted, sacrilegious events occur without the need for punishment and things that would normally be separated are allowed to join - the young with the old, heaven and hell.
Inner struggle stems from the disparity between life lived and life desired. The humour comes from the fact that each character still has their foibles and insecurities that make them human. Yet with the end approaching they no longer care what other people think. All differences and desires would suddenly become acceptable. This freedom is anarchy at it’s most beautiful, touching and poignant.

To add to the surrealism of the moments, we should never explicitly explain the impending doom as the reason for the bizarre scenarios and encounters, until the very end. Whereby cross-cutting our characters singing the line “it’s over” - a large fireball illuminates the night’s sky as we fade to white.
The video will attempt to avoid many of the cliches inherent in end of the world stories. Sure it is inevitable that with the apocalypse looming there will be many who decide they have put off, for far too long, their intentions to sleep with one another - but we will attempt to focus on the more eccentric and unusual desires and behaviours that some may have.
